Pedagogical innovation to enhance teaching performance in technological higher education
Main Article Content
Abstract
This systematic review examines the competencies and pedagogical innovation strategies required by technological higher education teachers to achieve optimal performance in the digital era. This need is intensified by the Fourth Industrial Revolution and the consolidation of Education 4.0, which demand accelerated pedagogical adaptation to labor markets shaped by automation and digitalization. The PRISMA 2020 guidelines were followed across six databases (Scopus, Web of Science, Redalyc, SciELO, Science Direct, and PubMed), yielding 86 initial records; after deduplication, screening, and the application of PICO eligibility criteria, a final corpus of 13 empirical studies published between 2020 and 2026 was obtained. For each study, the matrix specified the intervention, the prior instructional model it sought to change, and the measured outcome. Findings, systematized through an ICO-based matrix, show that integrating emerging technologies —artificial intelligence, data analytics, and immersive environments— only improves teaching performance when combined with a didactic restructuring grounded in reflective practice and comprehensive competency models such as TPACK and FLEXI-COMP. The evidence indicates that technology acceptance alone exerts a limited effect on performance, whereas teaching innovation acts as the central mediator of that impact. The review concludes that technological higher education institutions must overcome structural gaps in access and training and foster a culture of continuous professional development that consolidates teachers as designers of learning experiences and digital leaders. This is particularly urgent in contexts marked by connectivity gaps and limited institutional support, where digital inequity can otherwise deepen
