Racial discrimination and emotional competencies in university students

Abstract

This research, conducted at a university in Ica, Peru, delves into the complex relationship between racial discrimination and the emotional competencies of university students. Based on Critical Race Theory and Bisquerra's model of emotional competencies, this study analyzes how structural racism impacts the well-being and integral development of young people. Through a quantitative approach and a non-experimental correlational design, questionnaires were administered to a sample of 104 students. The results reveal that 35.6% of the students show high levels of discrimination, with a predominance of ideological biases and stereotypes. In turn, the majority of students are at moderate levels of emotional competencies, with weaknesses in emotional awareness and autonomy. Statistical analysis confirms a significant inverse correlation: the higher the racial discrimination, the lower the emotional competencies. It is concluded that discriminatory behavior is associated with poor emotional management, underlining the need to strengthen Social and Emotional Learning (SEL) to build a culture of equity and respect in higher education.
