Organized crime groups and corruption in the era of microtrafficking
Main Article Content
Abstract
This study explores the complex interrelationship between organized criminal groups and corruption in the context of drug micro-trafficking. Through a mixed methodological approach, quantitative and qualitative data from three regions with high rates of micro-trafficking and corruption were analyzed. The results show a significant correlation between the perception of corruption and the effectiveness of policies against micro-trafficking. Interviews with former operators revealed that corruption facilitates micro-trafficking through bribes, smuggling, legal favors, and evidence manipulation. Focus groups highlighted the lack of resources and internal corruption as barriers to effectively combat micro-trafficking. The study underscores the need to address corruption as an integral part of strategies against micro-trafficking, strengthening oversight, protecting whistleblowers, and improving training for officials. These findings have significant implications for designing more effective policies and implementing institutional reforms..
